Ella Pamfilova: we see a large number of digital attacks on CEC systems
On March 16, Ella Pamfilova, Chairwoman of the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC), met with international observers from the CSTO PA.
She reported that 160,000 professionally planned cyberattacks have been carried out on remote electronic voting (REV) systems from the start of the presidential election until today. According to her, the CEC website alone was attacked 18,000 times.
Ella Pamfilova shared that fake CEC sites appeared during the voting, collecting data of Russian citizens, they were blocked by Roskomnadzor. Also, unknown people created fake CEC accounts in social networks.
Sergei Pospelov, CSTO PA Executive Secretary, pointed out that the Assembly adopted Recommendations on Electoral Security, as well as the CSTO PA Recommendations on Countering Information-Related Offences.
As Ella Pamfilova informed the CSTO PA observers, attackers try to overload the system so that it slows down or stops functioning completely. However, all attacks are successfully repelled in a matter of hours or even minutes.
