Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania Elected as President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
Tulia Ackson, Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania, was elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on October 27 in Luanda, Angola. The election of the new IPU President took place at the 147th IPU Assembly. With 57 per cent of the total votes, Axon became the 31st leader of the Union, succeeding Portuguese Member of Parliament Duarte Pacheco.
Tulia Ackson was elected IPU President for a three-year term. The leadership of the Russian Parliament sent a congratulatory telegram to the new head of the Union.
The IPU is the oldest inter-parliamentary organization uniting more than a hundred countries of the world, and the Russian delegation regularly takes part in its work, explaining the position of the Russian Federation on all key issues on the international agenda.
As you may recall, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly has observer status with the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Representatives of the CSTO PA also took part in the work of the 147th IPU Assembly.
For reference only. Tulia Ackson is a practising lawyer with over 10 years of experience in labour law. She is the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania from February 1, 2022. Tulia Ackson is a BA and MA in Law from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and a PhD from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She is an advocate at the High Court of Tanzania and a member of the Tanganyika Law Society. Ms Ackson also taught at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law.
