CSTO PA representatives paid tribute to the defenders of Leningrad
CSTO Parliamentary Assembly representatives paid tribute to the victims of the Siege of Leningrad by laying flowers at the Piskarevsky Memorial.
Today the City on the Neva commemorates all those who perished in Leningrad during the Nazi siege. 80 years ago, on September 8, 1941 the enemy ring closed around the city. The countdown of the days of the siege began. The days of unbearable tragedy and overwhelming heroism, selflessness and courage.
At noon St Petersburg halted for a Minute of Silence. And only the metronome sounded from the street loudspeakers. Just like then, in 1941.
“On September 8 at 12:00 p.m. a citywide minute of silence using the St Petersburg public address system was declared throughout the Northern Capital in memory of the defenders of the city and residents of the besieged Leningrad who died and were killed during the siege,” reads a TASS report.
Today flowers were brought to the memorials. Flowers and wreaths were laid at the memorial plaque at 14 Nevsky Prospect that since the siege bears the inscription: “Citizens, this side of the street is the most dangerous during an artillery shelling,” at Piskarevsky, Serafimovsky, Smolensky and Volkovsky memorial cemeteries and at the Moscovsky Victory Park. At all memorials where lie soldiers who defended Leningrad and residents who died during the siege. There are 850 thousand of known victims.
We bow our heads to the blessed memory of all those who lived, fought and worked in the besieged city and gave their lives for their Motherland.
