On September 8, 1941, the Siege of Leningrad began. It was on this day 82 years ago that the enemy ring closed around the city and the countdown to the terrible 900 days and nights of the siege began.
Today a solemn and mournful ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers to the Motherland monument took place at the Piskarevskoye cemetery.
Representatives of the Secretariat of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly laid a wreath and flowers at the monument in memory of the defenders and residents of blockaded Leningrad.
Currently, more than 55,000 veterans of the Great Patriotic War live in St Petersburg, including 1,600 recipients of the medal For the Defence of Leningrad. There are also 47,500 recipients of the badge Resident of Blockaded Leningrad.
