The telegram to that effect was passed on Thursday by the President to Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Ambassador to Serbia, TASS reported, citing the press service of the President of the Republic of Serbia.
“Victory day is one of the brightest dates in the history of mankind and a symbol of rebellion and freedom-loving spirit of our glorious ancestors. I am honoured that our peoples together undergone the ordeal in the noble mission of freeing the world from the greatest evil of the twentieth century. Serbia and Russia are now fighting together again, this time against an invisible adversary, the coronavirus that knows no borders. At the same time, I want to thank you that during the big challenge for your country you expressed concern about Serbia. Thanks for human and national solidarity kindly shown to Serbia by the generous help of servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” TASS quotes the telegram.
“For us, this is a testament to your personal relationship with Serbia, as well as a testament to the exceptional relations and the closest friendship of our countries. Our relations are based on respect, understanding and mutual support, which is confirmed by Russia’s active support for Serbia’s territorial integrity, for which we are sincerely grateful,” the press service quotes the message of the Serbian leader. Mr Vučić expressed condolences for the coronavirus victims in Russia and hope for the quick recovery of patients.
Starting today, the Republic of Serbia lifts the state of emergency and curfew; public transport has been resumed, and restaurants and cafes have reopened. Shopping centres will open on May 8, and it is planned to resume air travel starting May 18.
Previously, Serbia had requested help from the Russian Federation in fighting the epidemic. On April 3 and 4, the airplanes of the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces delivered to Serbia Russian servicemen, among whom were military doctors and virologists of the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, special medical and protective equipment and 16 military vehicles.
In total, the Russian joint unit has carried out comprehensive disinfection activities at 156 sites in 30 cities and towns of the Republic of Serbia, treating more that 320 buildings and structures and 65 road sectors. Military doctors have examined and participated in the treatment of more than 780 patients infected with the new coronavirus.
We recall that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia is an observer in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
