Russian President signed a law criminalizing insulting veterans
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law earlier adopted by the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly criminalizing public dissemination of deliberately false information about veterans of the Great Patriotic War. It will be equated with rehabilitation of Nazism.
The law provides for increased fines as well. Rehabilitation of Nazism will be penalized with a fine up to 3 million roubles, forced labour or imprisonment for up to three years, according to the press service of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
Public humiliation of the honour or dignity of veterans, as well as desecration of symbols of military glory of Russia or clear disrespect for the days of military glory, committed through the media or the Internet, will entail fines from 2 to 5 million roubles or up to five years of imprisonment.
As you may recall, during the plenary session of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, which examined this draft law on March 17, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and Chairman of the State Duma, proposed that “committees on CIS, on security, colleagues who work in the Parliamentary Assembly of the CSTO and CIS should consider this bill as a model, so that it could be considered and possibly adopted in the countries with which we actively cooperate with.”
He also noted that it would be proper to discuss the issue on European platforms. “I think our colleagues who think clearly will support us,” Mr Volodin added.
