Special forces of the CSTO will practice cooperation during an exercise in the mountains of Tajikistan
Specialized tactical exercise Cobalt 2021 with the detachments forming the special forces units of the CSTO Collective Rapid Deployment Force (CRDF SFU) will take place on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan on November 17–19, 2021.
The exercise is conducted in accordance with the Plan for Joint Training of the Formations of the Forces and Means of the CSTO Collective Security System for 2021. This is reported by the press service of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The exercise will consist of two stages. During the first stage, participants will practice formation and deployment of the CSTO CRDF SFU Operational Headquarters and planning of deployment of the group of forces and assets of the CSTO CRDF SFU.
The second stage will involve a simulated combat of combined task forces.
The command and staff training with the operational staff of the CSTO CRDF SFU Operational Headquarters plans to test all elements of joint-force cooperation and planning and conduct of a special operation.
During the performance of training tasks, special units of internal affairs bodies, national guard, drug control and state security services of the CSTO Member States in close contact with units of the Armed Forces, Border Troops and Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as servicemen of the 201st Russian military base in conditions close to combat will practice interaction and field training, exchange experience, gain skills for participation in a large-scale special operation.
In the active phase of the exercise, the servicemen will conduct an operation of blockading and storming a building seized by simulated militants using reconnaissance equipment and helicopters. It is specified that Russian servicemen will carry out a helicopter-borne enveloping attack of the conditionally seized area with the use of Mil Mi-8MTV5-1 helicopters hovering at a height of 20 metres and ground assault groups on BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers and Tiger armoured vehicles. Covered by pairs of snipers, special forces units will land on the roof of the seized building from helicopters using special equipment.
Simultaneously with this tactical manoeuvre, reconnaissance groups on Tiger armoured vehicles and BTR-80 APCs will surround the area in a “crescent,” blocking the enemy’s possible escape routes, and engage with its battle outpost. The tactical episode will conclude with the storming of the seized building and the destruction of simulated fighters.
