CSTO and Russian Union of Veterans discussed preservation of the historical truth about the Victory
Stanislav Zas, CSTO Secretary General, Mikhail Moiseev, Chairman of the Russian Union of Veterans, Army General (ret.) and former Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR, and Dmitry Mezentsev, State Secretary of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, met on December 15, 2021 to discuss the expansion of patriotic education of youth, preservation of the historical truth about the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War and its leading role in the defeat of aggressors in the Second World War and strengthening the ties with other veteran organizations across the post-Soviet states.
According to the press service of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, one of the significant topics of the meeting was cooperation in the format of the CSTO and the Union State and organization of joint veteran- and patriotic-themed events.
As you may recall, in 2020 the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly adopted the Address of the CSTO PA to the Parliaments of the Council of Europe Member States on the Occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Victory over Fascism in the Second World War, which says, in particular, “Being forever indebted to the fallen and the victims of fascism, based on the principles of responsibility, morality and spirituality and on the provisions of international instruments adopted at the outcome of the Second World War, we appeal to the parliaments of Council of Europe Member States to take following legislative measures:
– to counter the resurgence and promotion of Nazism and its manifestations in modern Europe;
– to prevent the distortion of the historical truth about the Second World War, the attempts to revise its outcome and belittle the decisive role of the peoples of the Soviet Union in the Victory.”
In accordance with the 2021–2025 CSTO PA Action Plan on Approximation and Harmonization of National Legislation of the CSTO Member States, the Assembly develops recommendations to criminalize attempts to rehabilitate Nazism, distort the historical truth, denigrate the honour and dignity of military veterans, identify the role of the USSR and Germany in the Second World War and belittle the humanitarian mission of the USSR in liberating Europe.
