CSTO PA Presents Draft Recommendations on Countering Distortion of History
On March 26, Recommendations on Developing the Common Approaches to Countering the Attempts to Revise and Distort the Historical Events and Results of the Great Patriotic War and Second World War were presented at the meeting of the CSTO PA Council’s Expert Advisory Board in St. Petersburg.
The Recommendations are based on the results of a comprehensive scientific analysis of the established national practices, concepts and approaches in assessing and interpreting the events of the Great Patriotic War and World War II, the current legislation of the CSTO countries, as well as international laws.
Igor Valakhanovich, Chief Advisor of the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Research, presented the draft and shared details of the process of working on the text of the Recommendations.
"The upsurge of narratives around the world revising the patrimony of the Victory of the peoples of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany creates a dangerous turbulence, forcing us to clearly and unambiguously record and, if necessary, to protect the historical truth that was subconsciously accepted by the Soviet people, but today is subject to unjustified revision by external actors seeking to rewrite history in their own political interests," the text of the Recommendations says.
The participants of the meeting noted the acute relevance and importance of such a document in today's world, where history becomes a subject of political manipulation.
It is expected that after the discussion and approval of the Recommendations, the CSTO Member States will actively work on their implementation in order to preserve the historical truth.
Anatoly Vyborny, Chairman of the CSTO PA Council's Expert Advisory Board, suggested that the draft Recommendations should also be considered at the meeting of the CSTO PA Permanent Commission on Political Affairs and International Cooperation.
