Chairman of the CSTO PA, Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav VOLODIN met in Moscow with the Chairman of the Lower House of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mir Rahman RAHMANI.
They discussed the issues of parliamentary cooperation in ensuring security and combating terrorism and drug trafficking.
According to the press service of the Russian State Duma, at the opening of the meeting Vyacheslav VOLODIN said: “It is extremely important for us to join efforts to fight terrorism, to do everything to prevent the spread of drugs.” He stressed that it was important “…to find mutual understanding in addressing these issues within the legislative framework.”
Vyacheslav VOLODIN noted that it was Mr RAHMANI’s first official visit to Russia after his election as Speaker of the Lower Chamber of the Parliament of the Republic of Afghanistan. “Relationships should be based on trust, and trust is the basis of development. That is why we hope that your visit... will foster relations between our countries,” Vyacheslav VOLODIN noted.
Mr VOLODIN also invited his Afghan counterpart to develop not only the format of bilateral meetings, but also cooperation within specialized committees and organizations.
In his turn, Mir Rahman RAHMANI noted that “our efforts are aimed at ensuring the security of both countries, fighting terrorism and ISIS.” He also added that Afghanistan can use Russia’s rich experience in these matters.
“Much is being done to maintain our relations within the parliamentary dimension,” Mr VOLODIN said. “We invite you to participate in Development of Parliamentarism, a forum to be held in Moscow at the end of June. We hope that communication with our colleagues from other countries will also make it possible to find answers to the questions that all countries are concerned about,” Mr VOLODIN said.
The Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is an observer in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
