Vyacheslav Volodin suggested to consider the amendments adopted by the State Duma that increase penalty for the rehabilitation of Nazism as model for the CSTO States
On March 17, the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation passed in third reading the amendments increasing penalty for attempts to rehabilitate Nazism and public insult of veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
According to the press service of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the State Duma adopted in its third reading the amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences and Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which increase penalty for the rehabilitation of Nazism and public insult of veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
“Insulting those who stood up to defend the homeland is unacceptable. So are attempts to revise the outcome of the Second World War, to justify Nazism and to question the role of our people in the Great Victory. It is our duty to protect the memory of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers whom we owe our lives,” said Vyacheslav Volodin.
During the plenary session, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, suggested that “the committees on CIS affairs and security, colleagues who work in the Parliamentary Assembly of the CSTO and CIS should consider this draft law as a model so that it could be reviewed and possibly adopted in the countries with which we actively cooperate.”
He also noted that it would be right to discuss the issue on European platforms. “I think our colleagues who think clearly will support us,” Mr Volodin added.
The amendments adopted by the Russian State Duma establish criminal liability for public dissemination of knowingly false information about veterans of the Great Patriotic War. It will be equalled to rehabilitation of Nazism.
Rehabilitation of Nazism would be punishable by a fine of up to 3 million roubles, compulsory labour or imprisonment for up to three years.
Public disparagement of veterans’ honour or dignity, as well as desecration of symbols of Russian military glory or outright disrespect for the days of military glory performed through the media or the Internet would be punishable by a fine from 2 to 5 million roubles and the maximum penalty would be up to 5 years of imprisonment.
In the current version of the law, increased penalty is applicable when the offence is committed through the use of official position or the media. Now the Internet will be added to this. The maximum penalty is up to five years of imprisonment.
